Herington, a city with two lakes within a couple miles of city limits, is located in central Kansas.  Agriculture is important to the citizens of Herington, but to relax many residents spend time camping, boating, swimming, and fishing.  The Herington City Lake has a swimming beach as well as available residences and lots for purchase near the shores of the lake.

Herington is also home to a prominent branch of the Union Pacific Railroad, which employs many citizens of the area.  The presence of the railroad is the inspiration for the high school mascot - the "Railers".

City Park, in downtown Herington, features a walking path, swimming pool, playground equipment and picnic area.  Union Pacific volunteers run a mini-train in the South Park, which is also where the baseball, softball, and soccer complexes are located.  Herington also houses the Tri-County Historical Museum including a Rock Island Baggage Car and the Cotton Belt Railroad Caboose. Future plans include construction of a new Community Center.

Herington celebrates the Fourth of July with a community celebration following the Tri-County 4-H Fair.  In September, they have the annual Rails ‘n Trails Festival, and Veteran’s Day is celebrated with a special meal honoring veterans.
