Beloit CourthouseNear the eastern border of the state is Lawrence, KS. Once the home to James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, and Langston Hughes, the famous poet, Lawrence is also a college town. Kansas University provides Lawrence with a very diverse atmosphere. From watching the K.U. Jayhawks at Memorial Stadium and Allen Fieldhouse to enjoying live music on Massachusetts Street, there is never a dull moment.

Massachusetts Street, once the site of Quantrill's Raid, is now the main attraction for shops, restaurants, music and art venues. The University of Kansas also provides: the Lied Center for performing arts, bands, and guest speakers; the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics; the Spencer Museum of Art; and several War Memorials.
